太巻き / Futomaki

Futomaki is a type of sushi roll that originated in Japan and is known for its large size and variety of ingredients. The word "futo" means "thick" in Japanese, and futomaki rolls are usually 2 to 3 inches in diameter and filled with various ingredients such as pickles, fish, and eggs. Here is a recipe for thick rolls that you can easily make at home.

Futomaki

material:

• 4 sheets of sushi nori (dried seaweed)

• 4 cups cooked sushi rice

• 4 tbsp rice vinegar

• 4 tbsp sugar

• 2 teaspoons of salt

• Ingredients of your choice (pickled carrots, cucumber, avocado, tamagoyaki or tamagoyaki, etc.)

Instructions:

1. Put rice vinegar, sugar and salt in a small pan and mix. Place over low heat and stir until the sugar and salt dissolve. Remove from heat and let cool.

2. In a large bowl, mix the cooked sushi rice and mixed vinegar well.

3. Place one piece of nori on a flat surface with the shiny side down. Spread the sushi rice evenly and thinly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch rim on top.

4. Arrange your favorite ingredients vertically in the center of the rice. Be careful not to overfill the roll.

5. Using a sushi mat or your fingers, gently roll the seaweed and ingredients into a cylinder and seal the edges together. Repeat with remaining seaweed and ingredients.

6. Wrap the rolled sushi tightly with plastic wrap and let it rest for about 10 minutes.

7. Cut the futomaki into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife and add soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.

This recipe makes 4 large futomaki rolls. You can use whatever ingredients you like, such as pickled carrots, cucumber, avocado, tamagoyaki or tamagoyaki. Feel free to be creative and combine the ingredients to your liking. Enjoy handmade futomaki as a snack or light meal.
